Tips on how to make the most of your Marryoke!

For those of you who might not have heard of a marryoke (marry-oh-key) it’s basically a fantastic way to make a unique and memorable film of your wedding day by lip synching along to a song which is then played over the top, making you the star of your own music video!

Originally started in America, marryoke’s have really taken off in the last few years and are perfect for setting your wedding apart from the rest. People sometimes worry that lots of weddings feel the same – that everything has been done and every weddings seems just like the last… so having a marryoke is the perfect way to stand out and do something unique. Plus what better than to show your children in years to come how hilarious and silly Mum and Dad were on their wedding day!

Anyone can opt to have a marryoke as part of their package (I’ll always film a full day too so you’ll have a normal wedding film plus a marryoke) but I have found over the years that the BEST marryoke’s are made when both the bride and groom and super committed to doing it and making it fun. Filming a marryoke won’t take up much time – I only need a few minutes here and there – but if either the bride or groom isn’t really up for doing it or if they feel embarrassed singing and dancing, it can look a little flat. In other words, if you’re a natural wallflower, it might not be for you!

Another great tip is to learn the words ahead of time, or at least be very familiar with them. Every time someone forgets the words we have to do another take, so being familiar with the words can save loads of time and make the experience a lot smoother and easier. Make sure to also let your bridal party know that a marryoke is being filmed at the wedding and print off a copy of the lyrics for them too – the more friends and family involved in the song the better so again if they know the words everything will look much better!

So, in short, my tips for making the most of your marryoke are:

  1. Be committed! Marryoke’s are the best when everyone involved enjoys singing and having fun in front of the camera.
  2. Learn the words. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the lyrics ahead of the wedding day.
  3. Involve your bridal party and parents and explain to them what to expect so they’re aware of what they’ll be asked to do. Give them a copy of the lyrics too.
  4. Have fun! Marryoke’s are all about enjoying yourself and just being silly so let yourself go and enjoy starring in your own music video!
